Naturalization: Exemption from the English Language Requirement
“50/20” Exception:
- If you are 50 years old or older at time you file for naturalization AND
- Have lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident for at least 20 years when you file your naturalization application,
Then you still have to take the civics test, but you can take it in your native language with an interpreter. The interpreter must: (1) be fluent in English and your native language and (2) come with you to the interview. You must study 100 questions. During the interview you will be asked 10 questions and need to answer 6 (of the ten) correctly in order to pass the civics portion of the exam.

“55/15” Exception:
- If you are 55 years old or older at the time you file for naturalization AND
- Have lived in the U.S. as a permanent resident for at least 15 years when you file your naturalization application,
Then you still have to take the civics test, but you can take it in your native language with an interpreter.
